This is just family news…but it’s a big deal to us!
My children played (violin) in a concerto competition on Saturday. This was to determine which local young musician would have the privilege of being soloist with the local community orchestra at their next concert.
We thought both our children played their best, but there were fourteen finalists in this competition (nine of them violinists) and so we didn’t know what to expect. We were very happy for my son when the organizer called that evening to tell him he’d won the competition!
My husband made audio recordings of their performances and the links to those are on his website here.

Wow. I thought I was getting a sense of where this pastor’s, and this church’s, beliefs come from: Bible-based, literal, OK — I thought I knew what that meant. Hoooo boy did this topic toss me a big surprise. This is not what I’d read & heard about the Ten Commandments before. (Read on & see how it compares to your understanding of them…)
Here are the main points that I learned from class #4:

I caught a little bit of a Christian radio show about raising kids for true greatness last week.
I think every parent has hopes for their children. And if you aren’t currently raising children maybe you have nieces or nephews or grandchildren you have hopes for.
Barack Obama announced on Sunday that he’s thinking seriously of running for President in 2008. The following article was in last week’s TIME magazine:
My Spiritual Journey by BARACK OBAMA
Here are a couple of excerpts. Feel free to discuss other parts of the article if you prefer.
I am suggesting that perhaps if we progressives shed some of our own biases, we might recognize the values that both religious and secular people share when it comes to the moral and material direction of our country. We need to take faith seriously not simply to block the religious right but to engage all persons of faith in the larger project of American renewal.

I was considering posting Stephen Colbert’s interview with Richard Dawkins, but Hemant beat me to it. (I know some of you read Hemant’s blog and I wanted to post something you hadn’t seen) So here’s a serious interview with Dawkins which I found very interesting.
Here’s another Dawkins interview in which I thought the interviewer asked excellent questions.
