Book discussion tonight

Posted by Helen on: 12.11.2006 /

This evening I’m planning to go to up/rooted’s monthly meeting, in which Scot McKnight will discuss his latest book, The Real Mary.

Mike Clawson organizes the up/rooted meetings. He posts on our discussion board regularly and I met him at the Revolution Conference.

I don’t know that I’ll be able to go to any other up/rooted meetings, but this one is closer to where I live than usual, and the book discussion sounds interesting so I thought, why not?

I expect I’ll be the only “almost atheist” there. It’s a meeting for emergent Christians as best I can tell.

I’ll let you know how it goes later this week.

you know this is pretty crazy, but as it happens, I’ll be in Elgin Illinois tonite (In chicago for three days on a business trip) so … maybe I’ll drop in on this meeting/book discussion. I think it’s very kewl that scott mckight has “knight” in his last name and he went to nottingham university to do his PhD. as in robin hood and so forth. I think it’s very kewl for anyone to write a book which in any way helps “evangelicals” get over their total freak out attitude towards “catholics”.

Wow - it would be fun to see you there tonight Benjamin!

I read the book and I was impressed by Scot’s thoughtful treatment of the views of Catholics. He points out that Protestants often overreact and think Catholics believe things they don’t really believe.

Update: I went and Benjamin went too!

I’ll post a new blog entry about it once I’ve had time to write one.

Helen, we have now come within six degrees of separation. In his book “The Jesus Creed” Scot quotes several times from the book “Sing Me To Heaven” by Margaret Kim Peterson. Margaret is married to my cousin Dwight Peterson, after whom my son is named. Also, Scot works at North Park University where I have numerous connections.

I almost feel like I’ve met you. Well, in the same way that I feel like I’ve met Kevin Bacon.
