Faith in a dress

Posted by Helen on: 06.04.2007 /

Faith in a dress is a wonderful new collection of articles and poems written by women.

Pam Hogeweide of How God Messed Up My Religion and Erin Word of Decompressing Faith edited and produced it. It’s the June issue of Porpoise Diving Life, or you can go to the brand new blog they set up Faith in a Dress where all the writing is listed by title or author.

I just found out this is up. I’m looking forward to reading what Julie Clawson, Rachel Stanton, Megan Ady, Rose Swetman, Pam Hogeweide, Erin Word and a number of women I don’t know (but Pam and Erin probably do) have written. One of the articles is by me: Women Christian Leaders: The Wisest Wager.

nice link Helen, I like what I read there!

I found a group called The Sophia Institute here in Charleston, their mission, in part, is to promote the feminine side of spirituality. At first the way they stated it rankled me a bit, but my experience on the OTM blogs has taught me how to listen even when I’m rankled…and I’ve found some interesting programs there. I’m going to one Wed night - a talk by Sera Beak, who is a very nontraditional spiritual woman who has, they say, traveled the globe studying all the major religions and has a bold and brassy approach to being your authentic self. Last year they had Asra Q. Nomani speak–(author of Standing Alone in Mecca: An American Woman’s Struggle for the Soul of Islam) I didn’t know about them at that time, but you can be sure I’ll be watching their events roster from now on :)

btw, its not an exclusive female club — they let men speak too :)

Julie Marie, thanks for your comment. I expect you’ll learn fascinating things from the speakers at that group now you’re open to hearing what people from other traditions say. It might not help you with your own, if you learn things first-hand which conflict with the second-hand information you got from your teachers (I speak from experience ;-))

Julie Marie and Benjamin, I wonder if in some ways the most important time to listen is when we are ‘rankled’?

Paul, I already asked if this means I have to start wearing dresses. I was very relieved when Erin said no! So I think you’re off the hook ;-)
