Accepted

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

We watched this movie on Christmas Day (it was someone’s Christmas present).

This movie (in my opinion) more successfully conveys some concepts that are claimed to be core conservative Christian values than conservative Christianity does.

The movie is about a fake college set up by high school graduates who were rejected from all the real colleges they applied to. They create fake acceptance letters to satisfy their parents. They create a website, renovate a building and hire a Dean to make the fake college seem real to parents.

The fake college website says ‘acceptance is one click away’ and because that button actually works hundreds of other high school graduates show up to attend the fake college.

In a pivotal scene, the originator of the idea is about to tell them it’s fake and to all go home. He looks around at all their excited faces and realizes how much it means to each of them that somewhere was actually willing to accept them. And instead of telling them it’s all over he keeps the college going.

Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays

Monday, December 24th, 2007

my family I don’t mind what you call tomorrow…I just hope you enjoy it.

For me, this is a family time I appreciate. My Mom arrived last night to spend the week with us.

I’m happy that after a rough few days early last week (Chron’s disease related) I’m feeling better again. This is likely to be my healthiest Christmas ever :) (because of avoiding various foods) I’m feeling quite proud of myself that I made cookies with Esther and didn’t eat any myself.

By the way, I have a personal/family blog as well as this one, in case you didn’t know. It’s here: Love is the most excellent Way.

If you go there you’ll find lots of recordings of my children playing music plus a time lapse video of putting up the Christmas tree.

Diet restriction update

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

Earlier this month I wrote about food allergies and sensitivity. I said that I was trying a wheat (actually gluten) free, yeast free, dairy free, caffeine free and low sugar diet to see if it helps with my Crohn’s disease symptoms. I said it was helping a lot.

Since then I tried going off my medication, because I didn’t know if that made any difference. That didn’t work, so I’m back on it.

On Friday I went to see a dietician who specializes in Crohn’s disease. I wanted to find out whether what I was doing made sense to her based on her experience of what helps and what tends to be problematic.

She was very informative. She said I was on the right track.

12/17/07 Up/rooted city meeting

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

The Up/rooted city group held its third meeting last night.

In the first two meetings, as best I know (I was only at the second) people shared their stories for the whole time. At this meeting people shared briefly about themselves and then we discussed the issue “Should meetings end with the Lord’s Prayer?” I liked that format, because I like to hear peoples’ stories but I also like conversation and having a discussion topic seemed to encourage more interaction than having people share stories for the whole time.

I had raised the question about whether it works to end with the Lord’s Prayer on here after the last meeting. In view of that I thought I had better go and be part of the discussion about it. I was interested in going anyway but I don’t generally go out on weekday evenings unless I have to, especially in the winter. So it helped to feel that I really ought to be there, since this was ‘my topic’. (I congratulated Rebecca on thinking of a way to get me there!)

Fear

Monday, December 17th, 2007

Fear helps keep us out of danger. On the other hand it can get in our way, in the form of anxiety or worry.

Often when we’re angry, fear lies underneath the anger. Expressing anger feels better than admitting we’re afraid.

How do you keep fear in balance so it’s helpful rather than a hindrance? Especially during ‘the holiday season’ when the preparations, the people and the memories can give us extra reasons to be afraid.
