Update on my newspaper dialog with Dean

Posted by Helen on: 01.16.2008 /

In his most recent response to me in our local newspaper dialog, Rev Dean Lueking asked:

What reaches your soul that we ought to know more about? What steadies your steps as you experience The Way, not as an armchair exercise but as a one-foot-down-after-the-other daily walking the talk?

I liked that question because it gave me an opportunity to mention Off The Map in my response - which the newspaper editor (Ken Trainor) then used in the title: One Way to find The Way is Off The Map.

Dean and I get together from time to time as well as participating in this dialog. We had tea together Monday afternoon and chatted. We talked about a variety of things including the new high school superintendent’s desire to address the achievement gap at the local high school and the themes in Harry Potter.

Dean was as friendly and respectful as always. I invited him to the next city up/rooted meeting. He was interested but said the date (Jan 28) doesn’t work for him. He’s leaving again soon for another several weeks of travelling around the world, meeting Lutherans and hearing their stories and teaching classes for World Vision.

I really like your piece, Helen, and also Rev. Lueking’s. Wow, what a great opening he gave you to write about OTM and Otherlyness! And Jim wrote a nice response to your latest essay, too, online at the newspaper’s site.

Thanks Eliza - Dean asked me, before he wrote, how I would feel about him asking me to say more about those things. I said that would be great!

I wouldn’t have minded if he had just gone ahead and written without consulting me. I was touched that he asked me first.

I hadn’t seen Jim’s response - that wasn’t up earlier today when I wrote this. Thanks for pointing it out.
