Deep Shift: Everything Must Change Tour

Posted by Helen on: 01.31.2008 /

Deep ShiftI’m wondering who else is going to Deep Shift (Brian McLaren’s event to further explore/apply ideas in his latest book Everything Must Change).

The Deep Shift tour begins tomorrow in Charlotte, North Carolina. Here’s a detailed interview with Brian from The Charlotte Observer. The tour won’t be in my area until early April.

I found out late last year, to my surprise, that the “Chicago” event is going to take place only a mile from my house. I’m going to go. I’ve also offered to help.

I know Nick is attending the first Deep Shift event (in fact he’s leading a group discussion there). I’ll be interested to see what he says about it.

Helen, I look forward to your review of attending the EMC event.

I adore Brian McLaren. But everytime I hear about Deep Shift I crack up. I mean, c’mon, this phrase is one letter, one simple F letter away from meaning something else totally different. And the immature adolescent locked inside of me giggles herself silly everytime I read or hear about Deep Shift.

I was contacted by someone asking me if I wanted to help out with the Seattle event, a mere three hour drive from my Portland home. I was interested, maybe….until I was told that I would get a little discount, not a comped ticket. I emailed the person back and said,

I cannot make the financial commitment necessary to volunteer for this event.

Not a trace of snarkiness in my tone. I’m proud of myself for that one.

Anyway, it doesn’t matter. Even if I was comped to the event as a volunteer I’d still need to pay for gas, room and board which would easily add up to around $150-200.

I do look forward to hearing reports from folks who can attend. I like what Brian is doing and the voice that he is. Nothing but respect for the guy. Even though Deep Shift cracks me up.

Pam, fortunately it’s only a mile from me so gas and accommodation are not issues - although I see that you have an offer of free accommodation - that’s very kind of you, Benjamin.

Mark Driscoll gave a talk last year in which he made fun of the name ‘Deep Shift’, suggesting maybe the f shouldn’t be there.

Nick Fiedler is live blogging the first tour stop now.

As you already know Helen, I’ll be at the Chicago conference. I hope other Midwesterners reading this blog will be there too!

And I cautioned Brian once about how many people would end up leaving the “f” off of Deep Shift, and he just smiled.

Yes, I’m glad you’re involved with it too, Mike.

I think Brian’s ability to ‘just smile’ is one of his strengths.

I live near Charlotte where the event kicked off. Last Friday, Brian was interviewed on Charlotte Talks, a local NPR show. It was a great interview. Here is the link to listen to the archive: http://www.wfae.org/wfae/nav1024.cfm?cat=18&subcat=93

hey ben, thanks for the generous offer. i’ll rethink it and let you know if i change my mind, if everything changes for me to attend the Everything Must Change event. But if nothing changes in my thinking about the Everything Must Change gathering than consider it a non-change for me in regards to Everything Must Change.

(now read that outloud as fast as you can three times in a row!)
