New network with Scot McKnight, Dan Kimball and others

I was interested to read over the last few weeks that Scot McKnight, Dan Kimball and others are forming a new network which will be allied with Emergent Village but be different in a few ways.

The main ones seem to be:

  1. It will be more focused on evangelism than Emergent Village
  2. It will hold to the Lausanne Covenant (a fairly conservative evangelical statement of faith) whereas Emergent Village has chosen not to have a statement of faith.

This makes sense to me. If a group shares some of your priorities and focus but differs in ways that are significant to you, forming your own group which is friends with theirs seems like a better option to me than trying to change their priorities and focus until they match yours.

I suppose my favorite network would be one that emphasizes kindness, respect and practical involvement in activities that make the world a better place. The statement of belief would be that you believe in those things.

I agree that it’s better to form a new group than to try to change the old one until it fits everywhere. This saves a lot of strength. But churches have done that, and as it seems, they’re quarreling about who’s got it right until today. To build a new group means also to let go of the old one, not to try to convince the other anymore and not trying to snatch away any members from another group…

Anyway, although I agree with this Lausanne Convenant, it looked like a lot of work to be done and not about relationships (to other people or to Jesus), but that’s exactly what I’m living of. And relationships include kindness, respect and helping to make the world a better place for the other.
