StoryCorps is declaring November 28, 2008 the first annual National Day of Listening.

This holiday season, ask the people around you about their lives — it could be your grandmother, a teacher, or someone from the neighborhood. By listening to their stories, you will be telling them that they matter and they won’t ever be forgotten. It may be the most meaningful time you spend this year.

The site suggests questions to ask and makes it possible for you to record the story. You’ll get a CD of the story and another will be sent to the Library of Congress. As best I can tell there’s no charge for any of this.

I think it’s a great idea. If you’re with family and/or friends for Thanksgiving I hope you’ll take the opportunity to listen to their stories, whether you record them or not. If you do want to record them, visit the National Day of Listening site to find out how.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I’ve been listening to the leadup to this on NPR – several of the newscasters have interviewed, or been interviewed by, a family member on air. It’s a wonderful idea, to encourage people to do this in their own extended families, and Thanksgiving seems like the perfect time & setting to do this.

Thanks for your comment, Eliza – I didn’t know they’d been talking about this on NPR.
