Update on Mark Driscoll

edited 12/4/06 to add a link to Dwight Friesen’s comments

I’ve recently posted about the PAF protest against Mark Driscoll and Rose Swetman’s open letter to Mark Driscoll.

On Thursday evening Rose Swetman, Paul Chapman (organizer of the PAF protest) and a few other people met with Mark Driscoll. Apparently the meeting went well. Paul has posted on his site that he feels PAF’s objectives have been met and so the protest is called off. However, since he probably can’t get the word out to everyone in time that it is, he will be there Sunday holding a sign saying “Thank you Mark For Apologizing”. I appreciate Paul’s response to how events have unfolded in the last few days.

Mark Driscoll and this blog: do the same rules apply?

In comment #26 on “Are we graciously encouraging people away from Jesus?” Jeff wrote (bold emphasis mine):

No, I don’t mean the protest. From the many different comments I’ve read about Driscoll, it seems to me that the majority of those who have issues with him do indeed think he is inflicting eternal harm, at least potentially. If this is not so, I do not understand the links to sites about recovery from spiritual abuse, for example. If he is spiritually abusing people then it would appear to follow that this abuse has temporal and eternal consequences if it is indeed spiritual in nature. In light of certain doctrines regarding salvation, I agree with you. No person can ultimately thwart God’s intentions for someone.

Rose Swetman’s letter to Mark Driscoll

Rose Swetman is co-pastor of a church in the Seattle area. She has written this thoughtful and articulate open letter to Mark Driscoll which is also posted on her blog.

This is an open letter and response to you concerning your recent blog post titled “Evangelical Leader Quits Amid Allegations of Gay Sex and Drug Use” and your next post, titled, “Ted Haggard Scandal 2.0.” I have followed and added some of my own responses to some of the recent flurry of reaction on various blog sites to some of your statements.

Mark Driscoll and women

Note: the comments section on this entry is now closed. If you would like to continue discussing whether Mark Driscoll’s teachings are hurtful to women, please do so on the People Against Fundamentalism blog. If you would like to read about spiritual abuse or discuss it in general, without reference to a particular church or leader, please see this blog entry: Spiritual Abuse Recovery Resources.

A few days ago Mark Driscoll shared his response to the Ted Haggard situation on his blog. In his introduction he comments:

I have, however, seen some very overt opportunities for sin. On one occasion I actually had a young woman put a note into my shirt pocket while I was serving communion with my wife, asking me to have dinner, a massage, and sex with her.

She must have been a bit mixed up about what sort of communion was being offered at Mark’s church… Read the rest of this entry »
