Inside view of an atheist organization

by Eliza Well, I’ve managed to infiltrate an atheist organization. And they don’t suspect a thing! ;-) For those who don’t know me, I’m actually a lifelong atheist – so “infiltrate” is the wrong word. However, I thought I’d report here, for your eyes only ;-) what it’s like to be inside such an organization [...]

Reflections on the Prop. 8 protest

by Eliza On Saturday, November 15th, people gathered in cities & towns all over the United States to protest the passage of Proposition 8 in California, & to advocate for equality of marriage rights for same-sex couples. (Scan down at the site linked to see photos & comments from many cities & towns.) My 10 [...]

Moments of Silence

Eliza here. The discussion about Silent Reflection and Student Prayer Act prompted me to consider what it is I think during, and about, moments of silence initiated for a group of people by someone speaking to the group. You know, after the speaker says, “And now, let us have a moment of silence.” That led [...]

Pet Heaven

Eliza here. Our beloved dog of 13 years, Lopez, died two weeks ago. It made us very sad to see him become ill and then to lose him, but he was old and it was “his time”. I was interested to notice a couple of thoughts about “heaven” occurring to me during this difficult time. [...]

“Scared Faithless”

I (Eliza) had the pleasure of attending the Seattle Men’s Chorus (SMC) show “Scared Faithless: God and Gays in the 21st Century” with Benjamin and Megan last weekend. It was a most interesting and enjoyable evening! I was glad that Megan and Benjamin were interested in seeing the show. It was great to talk with [...]

Exploring, explaining, interacting

I’d love to hear about any routes people here might be taking, or considering, to hear about ideas & beliefs they might not normally run across, &/or interact with people who hold different beliefs. (Or, even, routes people tried or considered, that didn’t end up happening.) There have been several posts about experiences like this [...]

Class #14: The Last Things

This class was about Judgment Day, resurrection, and Heaven. Stuff I don’t believe in. The class discussion was aimed at Christians. The only thing the pastor said that was applicable to me (in my current belief state) was this: “The only reason a human being will go to Hell is because you won’t believe in [...]

The HPV vaccine

The HPV vaccine has been in the news a lot lately, & it raises a number of interesting moral and ethical issues. Gardasil (made by Merck & Co) was approved in the United States and the European Union in 2006, & is also approved in a number of other countries. Cervarix, a similar vaccine by [...]

Class #13: Prayer

OK, pleasant surprise, this class was interesting. As I look back over my notes, the pastor’s discussion was more interesting than the text’s comments on this topic. (The text starts this topic off with: “The child of God enjoys high privileges, not the least of which is prayer.” The text could stand to be revised [...]
