I heard Chuck Colson’s daily commentary on the radio this morning as I was driving home after taking one of my children to school.
In today’s commentary, Wombs for Rent, he objects to women paying other women to have babies for them. He quotes a columnist who also objects to it, but his reasons for objecting are different from hers:
I would submit that the reason for the revulsion [we feel about the concept of surrogacy] is that we cannot get away from the law written on our hearts, which tells us that the Creator has an intentional design for our families that benefits and protects men, women, and children.

17 Comments »The other day I ran across Lying With Impunity by Mark Earley, President of Prison Fellowship Ministries (the ministry founded by Chuck Colson).
It’s about how Planned Parenthood intentionally filed for planning permission for a new clinic under a name other than Planned Parenthood so local anti-abortion activists wouldn’t realize what was going on. (Of course it became clear eventually and anti-abortion activists protested but the clinic did open)
Mark denounces Planned Parenthood for lying, points out this shows the power of the anti-abortion movement there is and praises the brave anti-abortionists who opposed the new clinic once they found out about it.
My own reaction is: how sad is this, that the behavior of some Christians is so unpleasant and annoying that it results in organizations like Planned Parenthood ‘lying’ to avoid having the hassle of dealing with them?
When Jesus talked about being salt and light I don’t think he meant “be the salt that makes people throw up and the light that hurts and blinds their eyes”.
In one account his last instructions were “Go into all the world and teach people how to be my followers” – not “Go into all the world and be as self-righteously annoying and interfering (into other peoples’ business) as possible”.

80 Comments »Chuck Colson spoke at the Southern Baptists 2007 Pastors Conference last weekend.
The Associated Press Associated Press wrote about his speech. Some of the blogs I read have commented on the speech – understandably since he specifically mentioned atheism and the emerging church – using the Associated Press article as a resource. For example, Hemant and Mike Clawson have written about it.
I was going to do that too. But then I remembered I always encourage people to go to the source. Hey, maybe I should take my own advice and read the speech myself before commenting on it. I couldn’t find a transcript but the the video of it is available. Here are my own comments, having listened to the speech. Read the rest of this entry »
